You might be thinking, “OMG, why is she bald!?” Or maybe, “What has she been through? Why is she doing embroidery now?” Well, being bald is my choice (hair feels weird to me). 😅 But the rest of the story? Let me fill you in. 43 years ago, I faced numerous health challenges with my bladder, bowels, and kidneys. I was in a world of pain and often felt unheard. Much of the time, I wasn’t taken very seriously. I started having bladder, bowel, and kidney problems around age 3 and had my appendix removed at age 5. Due to my bladder issues, I was picked on throughout my school years. By 10 years old, I was diagnosed with Henoch-Schonlein Purpura, an inflammation affecting blood vessels in the skin, mucous membranes, joints, bowels, and kidneys, causing joint and abdominal pains. At 12, I was diagnosed with Interstitial Cystitis after ulcers were found lining my bladder wall. By 15 years old, I struggled to walk more than 3 steps. In January 1995, I underwent surgery to receive my Urinary Koch Pouch, a unique internal pouch. The following year, I suffered an undetected internal infection that left me fighting for my life in the hospital, where I coded on the operating table. I’m incredibly thankful they were able to revive me. Since then, I’ve endured 5 major abdominal surgeries and over 100 day surgeries, continuously fighting for my life. Having lived with my Urinary Koch Pouch for over 30 years, the Canadian Ostomy Association holds a special place in my heart, and I’m proud to be a supporter and Ambassador for young children and adults with pouches. All this to say, I’m a very empathetic person, which allows me to create amazing designs and tell stories through my embroidery art pieces. Your story. Our stories.
